About the CII

In 2012 the CII celebrates the first hundred years of its royal charter.

The Charter, issued by the then monarch King George V, and supplementally updated by Queen Elizabeth II in 1987, gives the CII the right to issue titles of its own but also confers on it certain responsibilities.

It is required "to promote efficiency and improvement in the practice of insurance among persons engaged or employed in that activity" and "to render the conduct of such business more effective and professional". It also calls upon the CII "to secure and justify the confidence of the public... by the conduct of reliable tests of the competence of persons engaged or employed in insurance".

As the world's largest professional body people working in insurance, risk and financial services, the CII works hard to ensure that its members have the right skills for the job, setting exams for those within the profession from awards and certificates to Chartered status and Fellowship. The CII also supports professionals at any stage of their career and works to ensure that their views are represented at the highest levels.

The next 100 years

With an eye on the future, the CII launched Discover Risk as a way to promote the risk profession to students at school, college and university.

Members receive key benefits like access to local events, soft copies of member communications and full access to our comprehensive online library resource.
